#244: The Power of Exclusivity

Have you ever visited a different part of the country and had the most amazing treat?

Maybe it was the best cupcake ever, the best pizza or the most amazing BBQ?

Of course, you have!

And I’ll bet you thought… “Gee, I wish I could get that treat at home. The people here are so lucky!”

Why does this happen? Why do we crave what we can’t have?

The reason is simple: exclusivity.

In today’s short podcast episode, I talk about the power of exclusivity—and how you can use it to attain higher fees and book your schedule as a writer or content marketer.

The notes that follow are a very basic, unedited summary of the show. There’s a lot more detail in the audio version. You can listen to the show using the audio player below. Or you can subscribe in iTunes to get this show delivered straight to the Podcasts app on your smart phone, tablet or iPod.

I would LOVE to have a slice of pizza from Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn right now.

But that’s the emotional side of me. The logical side of me knows I can get really good pizza not far from my home.

And besides, my city has plenty of places that out-of-towners go crazy over … and then dream about once they’re back home.

The grass is greener on the other side, isn’t it?

Since we can’t have it (or have it easily), we want it even more.

That’s the power of exclusivity.

So what does this have to do with your business?

One way to create greater demand for your services is to be more exclusive.

You can do that by:

  1. Raising and maintaining high fees.
  2. Being booked solid most of the time.

I’m not suggesting you raise your fees to a level where you can’t quote with a straight face.

Nor am I saying you should lie about your availability.

But one of your business objectives should be to develop a certain level of exclusivity.

Because exclusivity can be the domino that leads to so many other great things.
