Zig Ziglar was a popular salesperson and motivational speaker for many decades.

He used to tell a powerful story about two railroad workers. And that little anecdote had a big impact on my attitude and work ethic when I was just starting out in life.

In this short podcast episode, I retell the story (not as well as Ziglar did, but I try!). And I explain how shifting your mindset from working for yourself to working for your clients will get you what you want.

What’s the point of this little story?

You can work for yourself to generate a six-figure income, a more flexible lifestyle, creative variety, etc.

Which is all “me” centered stuff.

Or you can choose to go to work to make your clients’ businesses better. To make their jobs easier. To make their lives better. To bring some joy to what they do. To do great work that matters.

If everything you do is centered around you, guess what? You will struggle.

But if you take the stance that making your clients happy and delivering value comes first, then you will still get all the things you want for yourself.

This idea is encapsulated in another great Zig Ziglar quote:

“You can have everything in life you want — if you will just help other people get what they want.” ~Zig Ziglar
