The Value of Publishing Your Own Content

I’m often asked if it’s still worth creating your own content in the form of a blog or newsletter.

Typically, the writers who ask this question are busy with client work. So they’re trying to reduce the size of their to-do list.

Plus, there’s the question of impact. With so much content out there already, what difference can yours possibly make?

My answer to this question is always the same: yes, it’s absolutely worth it. But not for the reasons you think.

In fact, there are three surprising reasons why you should consider publishing your own content on a regular basis.

#1: Visibility into your target market

Creating and publishing your own content gives you visibility in your target market—assuming you put it out there consistently, promote it AND make it interesting.

That doesn’t mean it needs to be mind-blowing. It just needs to be interesting.

It also doesn’t have to be long: 200-300 words will do. And 300-500 words is a great range to work toward.

#2: Show prospective clients how you think

Your content is also an opportunity to show prospective clients how you think. It gives them a glimpse into your thinking process, philosophy, beliefs and personality.

People buy from people—and they overwhelmingly buy from people they like. If what you write resonates with them, that increases the probability they’ll hire you.

You also want to make sure you bring a unique angle to your ideas. One of the easiest ways to do that is with stories of things that have happened in your personal life or in your work with other clients.

#3: Get clarity around your own thinking

Publishing your own content can also help you gain clarity around your thinking.

We all have ideas in our heads that are just floating around. Until we force ourselves to think through, explore and document these ideas in a deeper, more systematic fashion, we can’t fully leverage them.

For example, I force myself to make little audio recordings every weekday for my coaching clients. These recordings provide them with insights to help them run and grow their businesses.

I create these recordings not just for the benefit of my coaching clients. I do it because it also forces me to crystalize some of the thoughts floating around in my head.

So yes, there are several good reasons why you should create your own content regularly. And these reasons are valid no matter how much content is already out there.
