# 242 The Greenest Grass in Town

When your business gets really challenging, it’s common to want to move on.

Move on to a different target market.

Or start offering a totally different set of services.

Or move out of freelancing and into a traditional job.

These are very common feelings. And let me tell you… I feel this way at least two or three times a year.

Too often, the grass just looks so much greener on the other side, doesn’t it?

In today’s short podcast episode, I explore why you’re usually better off improving what you’ve already built than building something entirely new.

And the psychological trap that makes you think otherwise.

The notes that follow are a very basic, unedited summary of the show. There’s a lot more detail in the audio version. You can listen to the show using the audio player below. Or you can subscribe in iTunes to get this show delivered straight to the Podcasts app on your smart phone, tablet or iPod.

Here’s what I’ve learned in my own business and from watching so many others build their own businesses.

The grass is greener where you water it.

Believing that a full pivot is the answer is a cognitive trap.

Moving on to something else feels like the easiest and best way out.

But in an overwhelming number of cases, moving on will take WAY more time, effort and resources than we think.

I’m not saying you should never pivot or make minor adjustments to your business.

I’m merely suggesting that you’re better off improving and refining your current situation (where you already have momentum) than you are starting from scratch.

Too often, we forget how good we have it.

And we don’t appreciate how much momentum we’ve built.

It’s only after we’ve made a drastic change that we see how green the grass was where we stood.

So before you make a rash decision, recognize this psychological trap for what it is.

And look for ways to improve your current situation.
