#222: Two Imperatives for a Fun and Profitable Business

Two imperatives have driven some of the biggest decisions I’ve made in my freelance business.

And both relate to client acquisition.

I may not follow these completely, 100 percent of the time.

But for the most part, they’ve guided how I think about finding and acquiring clients. And they’ve enabled me to build and grow a profitable and fun freelance business.

In today’s short podcast episode, I share these two imperatives with you so you can apply them to your own practice

The notes that follow are a very basic, unedited summary of the show. There’s a lot more detail in the audio version. You can listen to the show using the audio player below. So what are those two imperatives?

They’re quite simple:

1. Find clients that want to partner

Find clients that are looking for more than a one-off relationship.

Sure, you might still start things off with a pilot project. But if things go well, there’s more opportunity to do business.

One of the biggest levers for earning more in less time is working with long-term clients.

That’s why I looked for relationships where I could go deep and help in a variety of projects (and sometimes in a variety of divisions)

2. Price your services high enough so you don’t have to nickel and dime clients

The best relationships are with clients that see the value in my fees and don’t have a problem paying those fees

When that happens, the work is fun, the relationship is strong, and I make a great living.

And when I do have to jump through hoops for the client on occasion, I don’t resent it because I’m charging enough. I don’t feel like I’m being taken advantage of.

Think about these two imperatives

And think about how you can start incorporating them into your prospecting, marketing, positioning and pricing.
